CURRENT LESSON SERIES ON BULLYING START SEPTEMBER 10/11
We're starting our 11-week bully series on September 10/11...curriculum we designed in house at LCN.  Bullying is a big problem in our schools today.  Chances are every child attending school has either been bullied themselves, knows someone who is, or has seen a bullying incident...and this would be your child also!

Each week our lessons include small-group time for the kids to ask questions, share their concerns about bullying, share personal experience or experiences of someone they know who has been or is currently being bullied.

Our schools do address the subject of bullying, but we felt led by the LORD to do something here at church about the bullying problem too ...at least to make sure our kids are informed about what a bully is and how and why they bully, plus signs to watch for in a friend or classmate to see if they are being bullied.  And most important...what our kids can do and how they can react in a Christ-like way to bullying.  The number one thing being to TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT!

If you haven't seen our "schools" bulletin board, you should take a look the next time you enter our Surge room.  Our kids attend over 30 different schools!  If each of them could have an impact in their own school, even in a small way, it would help to stop bullying.

We started Lesson 1 with a bully awareness questionnaire.  If you or your child didn't get a chance ot take this quiz, ask us for a copy or you can take the quiz online at:  http://www.education.com/quiz/bullying-myths/

Our focus Bible verse for this series is:  2 Timothy 1:7  -- For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline.  We've asked the kids to memorize this verse and tell it to a small group leader or teacher each time they attend class.  They will receive a Bible buck if they can recite the verse.

Part of each week's lesson will be showing the kids that God knows what a bully is...in fact he put stories about bullies in the Bible so WE would know that HE knows what bullies are.  We will talk about a different bully in the Bible each week.  Ask your child who the Bible bully was this week!

MISSION OUTREACH TO CEDONIA COMMUNITY CHURCH IN HUNTERS, WASHINGTON
Again this year Jacob and Shannon put together a group of LCN volunteers to transport our entire VBS program to the kids at Cedonia Community Church in Hunters, Washington.  All youth and adults had volunteered at our Pandamania VBS held in June..so they were very familiar what to do for that program.

There was a total of 70 kids who attended throughout the week-long event, with an average of 55 per day...10 more on average than last year.

Everyone had an excellent time, as documented by the videos.  Check them out below.

Watch the video highlights of the week

Watch the volunteers "hamming it up" for their final get-together at the end of the week...by dancing to a Gummi Bear song!  Click HERE.

2011 CAMP SCHOLARSHIP FLOWER POWER FUND-RAISER
CAMP!  CAMP!  CAMP!  CAMP!  CAMP!

Many of the kids are REALLY excited about going to camp again this year or for the very first time.  But camp costs are expensive and not always in the budget for our families (especially if they have more than one camper).

So this year we thought we'd do something a little different to help the kids out with those costs.  The kids will be doing a fund-raiser selling flowers through Flower Power Fundraising.

This organization gives 50% back to the fund-raising organization.  As each kid makes sales, the profits will go first toward their $75 registration fee, and anything over that will be applied toward their full camp fee ($190).  If a kid doesn't earn at $75 in profits, whatever they do earn will be applied to their $75 registration fee and the family will need to pay the difference in order for their child to get registered for camp.

And. . . if a kid has some flower sales but is not planning to go to camp this  year, they might like to donate their profits to a camper friend.  Wouldn't that show the love of Jesus??!!

We think it's a win-win for everyone.  The kids' sales will offset their camp costs and their buyers will help them get to camp AND get some lovely flowers too!

There will be 2 ways to purchase flowers:
1.  Using the online link below:

http://www.flowerpowerfundraising.com/i/t/194813/6rCOJ4QHgr7W

A.  The online page will be especially useful for friends and family living out of town.  You can e-mail them the link and they can browse the online catalog at their leisure.  Orders via the online page will be sent directly to the purchaser for a flat $5 shipping fee per address no matter the quantity of the order.

B.  Or you can also browse the catalog, figure out what you want and place your order with one of the kids.  Orders can be picked up at the church or delivered to you by the kids, and there will be no shipping fee added to your order.

2.  Or just place your order directly from the kids who will have full-color catalogs and order forms.  Again, those orders will be available for pickup at the church or delivered to your home by the kids, and there will be no shipping fee added to your order.

FINAL UPDATE:  The kids sold enough flowers for us to have over $600 added to the camp scholarship, which Jacob will apportion out to our campers.  We had a record number of campers this year:  55!   It was a great time for this good-sized group from LCN.

SCENES FROM LAST YEAR'S CAMP:
SURGE KIDS MISSION PROJECT: MOSQUITO NETS FOR AFRICA!
Our recent collection for new soccer balls was a great success.  We sent 6 soccer balls with air pumps over with our Mission Team in December 2010.

Our latest missions project:  MOSQUITO NETS!

When Rene Mbongo was here last summer and again in the fall he told the kids just how important mosquito nets can be to the health of people in the African villages.  According to United Nations statistics, malaria is particularly devastating in Africa, where it is a leading killer of children.  In fact, there are 10 new cases of malaria every second. Every 30 seconds, a child in Africa dies from a malaria infection.

A simple mosquito net can prevent much illness and even death from malaria.  Providing nets is a project dear Rene's heart.  The church as a whole had a special collection on December 12 for Serve Spokane and for mosquito nets for Senegal.  This will be a real great start to Rene's need for nets.

Our kids in Surge want to jump in and help out too, and so we will continue to collect offerings for nets for the next several months.

Net Tally:
We collected enough money for
40 nets!
This will be added to the huge amount of nets that our church paid for with a special Mission Sunday offering.  With the kids' and adults' net contributions, Rene Mbongo's request for nets for the villages and the orphanage and hospital is close to being met!  Hallelujah!

MISSION PROJECT: SOCCER BALLS
Our church team leaves December 1 for Senegal to visit 4 villages and the local orphanage.  One of those 4 villages will be prayerfully chosen for Life Center North to "adopt."  Our Surge kids gave their tithes and offerings over the last several months to purchase salvation soccer balls to send with the team.

We had all the kids at the November 28 service sign one of the soccer balls that will be given to the kids at the orphanage.  We also sent pictures of the kids present that day at church.  Here's a picture of the signed soccer ball and the pictures of the kids:

UPDATE ON MISSIONS PROJECT: SOCCER BALLS FOR AFRICA

The SURGE kids have started their next missions project:

Soccer balls for Africa!

MISSIONS UPDATE:  A church missions team will be heading off to Africa first of December to get to know more about 4 different villages, and from those 4 the church will prayfully consider which one LCN will be "adopting."  The team will present at 1 soccer ball and air pump to the chief of each village, so our SURGE kids will be part of this exciting project!
